Account Protection Guide

How to safely manage personal and corporate accounts with Revolut, Wise, Vivid Money, Paysera and similar EMIs — and minimise the risk of automated AML/KYC freezes.

Before You Open an Account

Before focusing on how to unblock funds, you must learn how to properly manage your accounts. The very first step — before opening any personal or corporate account — is to evaluate the jurisdiction. Check whether the local Central Bank actively assists consumers in disputes against EMIs, and verify the corporate structure, shareholders, and directors of the EMI itself.

You should also consider the average duration of civil proceedings in that country. For example, the Central Bank of Cyprus offers virtually no consumer support, and the Cypriot civil court system is among the slowest in Europe. Conversely, Estonia and Lithuania have fully digitised their judicial processes — making civil proceedings the fastest in Europe — and their Central Banks operate robust mediation channels.

Most EMIs freeze accounts using automated, complex algorithms. Below are the 10 Golden Rules to limit your risk with providers such as Revolut, Wise, Vivid Money and similar platforms.

10 Golden Rules

Manage Your EMI Account Like a Compliance Officer

Rule 01

Consistency in Identity, Residence, and Usage

All personal data — name, address, phone number, ID document, and tax residency — must remain consistent across providers. Avoid constantly switching IPs or VPN locations and never log in from sensitive jurisdictions. Data and devices scattered across multiple countries are one of the strongest triggers for automated AML alerts.

Rule 02

Never Use Personal Accounts for Corporate Activity

This is one of the most frequent causes of account closure. Personal accounts are exclusively for private transactions. Commercial or business wire transfers received on a private account will trigger an immediate AML block and, in most cases, a permanent termination.

Rule 03

Avoid Anomalous Transaction Patterns

AML algorithms continuously monitor behavioural changes: sudden spikes in volume, high frequency of inbound/outbound transfers within a few hours, funds passing through without resting, transfers to high-risk countries, or the simultaneous use of multiple cards and accounts. An account that usually moves €200 and suddenly receives €25,000 will almost certainly be locked for review.

Rule 04

Always Keep Clear Source of Funds (SoF) Documentation

Be ready to instantly provide clean PDF evidence: invoices, contracts, tax returns, bank statements, deeds of sale, payroll slips, or corporate registers. The speed and clarity of your response during a compliance review dramatically changes the outcome.

Rule 05

Do Not Use Vague or Ambiguous Payment References

References such as "investment", "crypto", "loan", "gift" or "consulting" without context trigger automated holds. Always use precise and documentable descriptions, for example: "Invoice no. XXX dated XX/XX/XXXX" or "Software development services under contract no. XXX".

Rule 06

Be Extremely Cautious with Crypto

Many EMIs have low tolerance for cryptocurrency activity. Frequent triggers include transactions with unregulated exchanges, repeated micro-transfers, P2P platforms, and interactions with unverified wallets or mixers. Even fully lawful activity can result in funds being frozen until manually reviewed.

Rule 07

Avoid Unnecessary Geographic Triangulations

Layering funds across multiple borders — for example Germany → Hungary → Lithuania → EMI → another card — looks to an AML system like an attempt to obscure the origin of money. Keep your flows simple and minimise geographical dispersion.

Rule 08

Keep a Distributed Balance

EMIs are not traditional banks. They can restrict access instantly, their customer support is often automated or slow, and compliance checks are uncompromising. Always distribute your liquidity between a traditional bank, a primary EMI, and a secondary backup EMI.

Rule 09

Cooperate Professionally with Compliance Teams

Ignoring alerts or arguing with support agents only prolongs the freeze. When requested, send documents promptly, in clean PDF format, with a linear and simple explanation. Confused or convoluted responses almost guarantee the account stays locked.

Rule 10

Avoid High-Risk Business Sectors

EMIs aggressively restrict accounts linked to gambling, unregulated forex, aggressive affiliate marketing, opaque dropshipping, adult entertainment, payment arbitrage, or high-volume international trading without an established corporate history.

The Ideal Profile

EMIs Work Best When Your Behaviour Looks Like This

Compliance algorithms are pattern-matchers. The closer your account activity stays to the four traits below, the lower the probability of an automated freeze.

Simple

Avoid unnecessary complexity in flows and counterparties.

Predictable

Stay close to your historical volumes and patterns.

Documentable

Every inflow and outflow can be justified on demand.

Consistent

Aligned with your declared profile, country and activity.

Most Valuable Advice
The Ultimate Insider Secret

Pre-Approve Unusual Transactions

Before executing an unusual or large transaction that you suspect could look risky, proactively submit the full details and supporting documentation to the EMI's customer support — via chat or email — and ask them to pre-approve it.

Keep a copy or screenshot of their written approval. It becomes definitive evidence if the automated system still triggers a freeze later — and dramatically strengthens any future dispute or legal claim.
